The Egypt Study Circle was founded in 1935 - one of the first of the specialist single-country philatelic research groups - by the late Dr William
Byam and 23 other enthusiastic students of stamps and postal history of Egypt and the Sudan.
Today there are some 200 members world-wide, in 22 countries. We have Agents in Egypt, the Antipodes and North America.
The Circle holds five London meetings a year, on Saturday afternoons on alternate months, January, March, etc. - normally at the Victory Services Club,
Seymour Street (near Marble Arch) - which are usually devoted to a single topic. This may be on a single stamp issue or a postal history theme.
Undoubtedly the best way to increase one's knowledge and interest in Egyptian philately is to attend these meetings. As an indicator of the range covered,
recent meetings have taken as their theme Carried by Sea, Hotel Postmarks, Cigarette Tax Stamps, Heliopolis, Airmails of Egypt, the Fuad 1927 Issue, EEF,
De La Rue Issues, Official Stamps and Covers and the Rural Post.
We have an active Facebook page, a website at egyptstudycircle.org.uk, which we keep up to date to act as a conduit for news and views to and from members across the world;
and we publish a magazine, The Quarterly Circular, which, as its Name suggests, appears four times a year. This has long been the cornerstone of the Circle.
The QC contains articles and notes, and members are encouraged to submit items for publication and to comment on others’ articles.
It has won medals at international level.
Auctions of Egyptian stamps, postal history and ephemera are held twice a year, in spring and autumn, and usually contain about 700 lots of members' material.
The Auctions are not open to non-members.
The essence of the Circle is the numerous research studies undertaken by its members on the many and varied aspects of Egyptian philately.
Members are expected to play their part in contributing information from their collections to the research leaders.
